Privacy Policy

Our Commitment

OpenTN is a civic transparency project. We believe a site dedicated to government accountability should respect the privacy of its visitors. We collect as little data as possible and never sell or share information about our users.

Analytics

We use a lightweight, privacy-focused analytics system operated by Position5. Analytics are loaded only after you consent via the cookie preferences banner.

What our analytics record:

  • Page views (which pages are visited, not who visits them)
  • Referrer (how you found us)
  • Screen size and browser language (aggregated, not individually identifying)
  • UTM campaign parameters (if present in the URL)

What our analytics do not record:

  • IP addresses
  • Browser fingerprints
  • Personal identifiers of any kind

An anonymous session identifier is stored in sessionStorage (not a cookie) and is automatically cleared when you close your browser tab. If you withdraw analytics consent, this identifier is immediately deleted.

Analytics data is sent to api.position5.org and is not shared with any third parties. The script respects the Do Not Track browser setting.

Cookies

OpenTN uses one cookie: a small preference cookie set by our consent banner to remember your analytics choice. We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or third-party cookies. If you decline analytics, no other cookies are set.

Donations

If you choose to support OpenTN through a donation, your payment is processed by Stripe. We do not store your credit card number or financial details. Stripe's privacy practices are governed by their own privacy policy.

Third-Party Services

OpenTN loads resources from the following third-party services:

  • Google Fonts — web fonts (DM Sans, IBM Plex Mono, Playfair Display, Source Serif 4). Google may log font requests per their privacy FAQ.
  • jsDelivr CDN — Chart.js library for data visualizations.

Data We Display

All campaign finance data displayed on OpenTN is derived from public records filed with the Tennessee Bureau of Ethics and Campaign Finance. This information is already publicly available. See our disclaimer for details.

Methodology

Reports are parsed from official XLS filings and may contain minor formatting variations from the original records. All data is attributed to its source.

Community Funding Index scores are computed from four weighted signals: small dollar power (25%), neighbor funded (30%), funding spread (25%), and people vs. PACs (20%). Grades are curved based on all scored candidates.
